The E.O. Smith boys’ soccer team had a strong season for 2011, putting together a 9-3-4 record and advancing to the second round of the Class L state tournament. There they lost by a score of 2-1 to Avon, a team that would advance to the final game (Avon lost the championship to Bunnell). The team lost a number of strong senior starters and faces a rebuilding year for 2012. With six seniors and three freshmen, the bulk of the team is made up of sophomores.
Prior to the season-opener against Farmington on Sept. 11, one of those sophomores, Dan Melody, talked about the season while his teammates warmed up (Melody was sitting out due to illness). Melody said that several pre-season scrimmages had brought mixed results for the team, with a win and a number of losses. “I think we really have to put every effort into every game,” he said, adding that communication and passing were skills that the team was working on.
Melody also said that the team had high hopes for the season. “We’d like to have a winning season and go a few rounds in the states,” he said.
Against Farmington, E.O. Smith let an early goal in. By the end of the half they were still down by a score of 0-1, despite a consistent effort by both sides. The final score of the game was 0-2 Farmington.
E.O. Smith takes on Rockville at home on Friday, Sept. 14, beginning at 3:45 p.m.
The head coach for the E.O. Smith varsity boys’ soccer team is John Blomstrann. This year’s seniors are: Xavier Fegan, Luis DeLos Santos, Jacob Hall, Abdul Al-Rukaibawi, Harrison Fearnley and Tom Giardina.
