For a town that had no football team for decades, Colchester today starts training its players very young, at the youth football level. “I began coaching football at the club level in Colchester, so many of the children who are freshmen through seniors today, I have known since they were about 6 years old,” said Bacon Academy's new head football coach, Brian Enrique.

"The students truly love the sport. Currently on the Bacon Academy roster, there are 65 young men. The freshmen team started with a win, the varsity lost by one touchdown to Plainfield, and the JV team will start out on Saturday, Sept. 29," Enrique said. "All of Colchester should come to the games with their cow bells," the coach said.

The varsity team has a big rival game in Montville, on Friday night, Sept. 28. “As far as the varsity team, there is a very talented group of kids this year. They need a statement win," Enrique said.

The five varsity football team captains for the fall 2012 season are Matt Gilday, Trey Archambeault, PJ Sawicki, Nate Kozlowski and Dylan Snyder. They are all seniors except for Kozlowski, who is a junior quarterback. "He is a fantastic young player who people want to come see play,” said Enrique.

One of the unique things at Bacon Academy is that all athletes must maintain good grades, better than just passing.  "We have higher standards than the norm. Our players go to the mandatory study hall every day to work on their school work before they come to practice. The students are already looking at colleges, and the colleges are looking at them," said the coach.

Bacon Academy’s varsity team travels to Montville on Friday, Sept. 28, for a 6:30 p.m. game, and goes to Waterford on Oct. 5 at 6:30 p.m. The junior varsity team, including sophomores and juniors, plays at home against Montville on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 10:30 a.m., then takes on Waterford at home on Oct. 8 at 11 a.m. The “froshmore” team - a mix of freshmen and sophomores – goes to Montville on Thursday, Oct. 4, for a 3:30 p.m. game, then visits Waterford on Oct. 11 at 5 p.m. For a complete schedule, visit
