The Lyman Memorial girls' soccer team overcame early-season injuries to put together a winning season that took them all the way through the quarterfinals of the state tourney. Finishing up the regular season with a 9-6-1 record, the Bulldogs tied for the ECC M Division title.
“That was a good thing for us,” said backup goalkeeper Cara Habicht, a sophomore. “It’s given us the spirit to get here tonight.” Habicht was referring to the quarterfinal round of the Class S state championships, where the number-11-seeded Bulldogs took on number-three seed Portland, on Nov. 14. Referring to the seven Bulldog seniors, “We really just want to win it for them,” said Habicht.
Senior goalkeeper Mary Labas was called upon to make a number of saves early in the game, with Portland finally scoring the first goal at 20:14 in the first half. It was the only score of the half. More than midway through the second, Portland scored again. A few minutes later, Corrie Hoyt scored for Lyman, to cut the Portland lead to 2-1. But Lyman didn’t get another opportunity at the net. The final score of 2-1 sent Portland to the Class S semifinals against Litchfield. Lyman’s final record for the season was 11-7-1.
The head coach of the Lyman Memorial girls’ soccer team is Mark Morello. Assistants are Dick Tanger and Jenelle Jahoda. Seniors on this year’s team are Mary Labas, Joanna Weir, Rebecca Novotny, Madeleine Flannery, Casey Kelley, Ida Grieg-Lie and Sarah Acerbo.
