Blue Slope ushers in the holiday season

It was the picture-perfect late autumn day on Nov. 23, as folks kicked into holiday mode the day after Thanksgiving. As boxes were being hauled out of attics, and lights and wreaths began to make an appearance on people's doors, local Christmas tree farms were doing a brisk business, Black Friday sales were in full swing, and at Blue Slope Farm it was time for the annual Advent activity. A yearly tradition, the event offers the opportunity to enjoy a wagon ride around the picturesque farm. Belgian draft horses Millie and Betsy had worked up a sweat by the time they pulled back into the parking lot after the first ride of the day. Gentle giants, the pair patiently stood as children paused to caress their large, downy-soft noses.
Inside the rustic barn, children sat down to work on a Christmas-themed craft. Wielding a pair of scissors, Caleb, from Preston, confirmed that he’d been the one to select most of the Christmas carols during the preceding wagon ride. Caleb attended the event with his mom, dad, older brother, and grandparents. Asked his favorite carol, “Deck the Halls with Boughs of Holly,” said Caleb decisively.
The Blue Slope Advent activity includes a wagon ride (or sleigh, weather permitting) featuring a Christmas sing-along, popcorn, wassail punch, hot cocoa and a craft activity. The event continues on Saturday, Dec. 1, and Sunday, Dec. 2. Rides are scheduled for 1, 1:45, 2:30 and 3:15 p.m. Reservations are required at 860-377-3740 or museum@blueslope.com.
