Coming into a Thanksgiving Day match-up against Ellington/Somers, the Coventry/Bolton/Windham Tech Patriots needed a win to secure a spot in the playoffs. The Coventry/Windham Tech team had a strong season last year, finishing with a 9-1 record and falling in the first round of the post-season to Daniel Hand, the eventual Class L champions. This year, with the addition of about a dozen players from Bolton High School and a move down to Class M, the Patriots felt they had a shot to take their season even further.
But Ellington, coming into the Nov. 22 game with a 9-1 record, wanted that playoff spot as well. And with a 38-14 win, the Ellington Knights put an end to the Patriots’ season and advanced to post-season play. Ellington, a number-three seed, was scheduled to take on number-two-seeded Weston on Nov. 27.
Coventry/Bolton/Windham Tech Patriots senior Kyle Wing finishes the season holding the number-10 position state-wide for rushing yardage, according to maxpreps.com. Senior Tommy Myers, leading the team for receiving yardage, will play football for UConn next year. Seniors Nathan Decker and Austin Ives also made significant contributions to the Patriots’ offense this year. Leading the Patriots’ defensive team was senior Darick Orange.
Quarterback/wide receiver Devan Valdes and running back Vincenzo Marciano, both juniors, should continue to strengthen the team for 2013. Valdes led the team this year for passing yardage and made significant scoring and rushing contributions. Marciano contributed rushing yardage, racked up a number of touchdown carries and played a significant defensive role.
The head coach for the Coventry/Bolton/Windham Tech football team is Tony Bonito. Seniors on this year’s team are Sarif Stewart, Colin Smith, Austin Vernesoni, Nathan Decker, Austin Ives, Tom Myers, Kyle Wing, William Ennis, Marcin Kuziak, Darick Orange, Chris Gebhart and Jannick Beil.
