Several area teams post strong fall seasons

Several local high school sports teams put together strong seasons for the fall of 2012. The RHAM girls’ soccer team finished the regular season with a 13-3 record, finishing 13-1 in the CCC East to capture the league title. RHAM defeated both Sheehan and Bacon Academy during the Class L state tourney to advance to the quarterfinal round, where they were knocked out by Pomperaug.

The seniors on this year’s RHAM varsity soccer team are: Sydney Aldrich, Kat Titterton, Brianna Byrne, Caitlyn Ayotte, Mykaela Scarpace, Alex Cascio, Nicole Jepson, Nicole Aquillo, Marissa Larned and Susan Stowe.

The RHAM boys’ soccer team upset Waterford during round two of the Class L tourney after posting a 9-3-4 record for the regular season. RHAM knocked out Fermi in the quarterfinal round to advance to the semifinals, where the Sachems were defeated by Farmington, the eventual winners of the title.

The seniors on this year’s RHAM varsity boys’ soccer team are Josh Salan, Andrew Lavoie, Sean Lavasseur, Billy Walsh and Andrew Filthaut.

After a disappointing performance against Bristol Eastern that resulted in the loss of the CCC title, the RHAM volleyball team was back in form as the Sachems took on E.O. Smith for round two of the Class L state tourney. The Sachems defeated E.O. Smith and Woodstock Academy to advance to the semifinal round, where they once again faced Bristol Eastern and once again lost. Bristol Eastern knocked the Sachems out of the tourney and went on to defeat East Lyme for the Class L title.

The seniors on this year’s RHAM volleyball team are Hannah Hyatt, Francesca Mack and Briana Geoghegan.

The Lyman Memorial girls’ soccer team put together a 9-6-1 regular-season record, earning a number 11 seed for the Class S tourney. The Bulldogs defeated both Stafford and Bolton to advance to the quarterfinal round, where they were knocked out by Portland.

The seniors on this year’s Lyman Memorial varsity girls’ soccer team are Mary Labas, Joanna Weir, Rebecca Novotny, Madeleine Flannery, Casey Kelley, Ida Grieg-Lie and Sarah Acerbo.

The Lyman Memorial volleyball team put together a 14-4 record for the regular season, entering the Class S tourney with a number nine seed. They advanced past Housatonic Regional and East Hampton before they had the misfortune of coming up against Coventry in the quarterfinal found. The Lyman season ended with a loss to Coventry, a team that has defended the championship since 2006, and which finished the 2012 season undefeated.

The seniors on this year’s Lyman Memorial girls’ volleyball team are Chelsey Hussey, Rachel Runkle, Genny Clements and Rachelle Hyburg.
