An East Hampton woman won the title of Miss Connecticut USA 2013 this month during a three-day pageant held at the Hartford Farmington Marriott hotel. Erin Brady, 25, competed against 37 other women in her second attempt to win the title, having been named first runner-up in the pageant last year. She said that coming so close to winning in her previous attempt made her eager to try again this year.

“It’s something I’ve always wanted to pursue, but didn’t think that I had a shot at doing it,” Brady said. “I went out and did it and succeeded at it.”

Also voted Miss Congeniality during the pageant, Brady said she was careful not to trip and fall when she went up to accept the honor, like Sandra Bullock did in the movie, “Miss Congeniality.”

Her preparation for the pageant involved getting what she considered to be the perfect outfits to wear and working on her interview skills, along with working out and eating right. It also involved a lot of mental prep work, she said,  since she knew going in how it would affect her nerves. She said yoga helped her to calm herself and her mind.

Brady said she hopes being Miss Connecticut USA will give her the opportunity to help raise money for organizations involved with breast cancer awareness and habitat for humanity, which are two of the causes she is interested in. She would also love to help the families in Newtown, Conn., who lost loved ones in the recent school shootings.

She credits the skills she has learned by competing in pageants for helping her to land a job as senior accountant with Prudential Financial in Hartford this past July. "The great thing is I think I’m well-grounded, so I’m just looking forward to being able to do a lot of things in my community and for the state of Connecticut with the Miss Connecticut USA title,” Brady said.

Brady will be participating in the national Miss USA pageant in June. The Miss USA pageant is separate from the Miss America pageant, which will hold its final contest in January in Las Vegas.
