Before the Town Council meeting on Monday, March 4, Mayor Thomas Delnicki hosted the 4th Annual Mayor's Cup All Star Cub Scout Pinewood Derby Race. Competing in this race were four Pinewood Derby cars made by four Scouts – one from each of South Windsor's Cub Scout packs. They were Owen Brown, of Pack 389, Brett Smurra, of Pack 186, Alexander Jonsson – last year's winner – of Pack 390, and Dylan Hutton, of Pack 886.
“These four young men represent the champions of the four Cub Scout packs in town,” said Mike Roscoe, a pack leader for Pack 390. “One of the great traditions of the Cub Scouts is being able to run the Pinewood Derby Race.” Scouts all begin with a 6-inch block of wood. Each boy carves out a car, paints it, tacks on the four wheels, and races his creation at the Pinewood Derby.
“This year in South Windsor, we had 170 Cub Scouts running Pinewood Derby cars over the past four weeks,” said Roscoe.
Four years ago, the South Windsor packs began the tradition where the four winners would compete against each other for the Mayor's Cup. The result of the March 4 race saw 8-year-old Hutton as the winner, with Jonsson in second, Smurra in third, and Brown in fourth.
“You beat the odds and taught the older guys how it's done,” said Delnicki.
