The Glastonbury Chamber of Commerce's Health and Wellness Council is launching the Steps 2 Success fitness challenge, a fun new initiative, aimed at keeping the local workforce healthier, and therefore more productive. It kicks off on April 1, and will last for eight weeks, inviting participants to form teams and compete in events that involve getting people moving and tracking their exercises electronically.
Chamber President Mary Ellen Dombrowski said about 60 participants have signed up so far, and more are welcome to join, even after the challenge begins. Participants track and record their steps on a daily basis with a pedometer, and then enter the results at www.walkertracker.com, in a program customized specifically for the Chamber's program.
Other forms of exercise, including biking, dancing and swimming, and even the movements involved in scrubbing a floor are converted into steps via a chart. Participants set weekly goals for themselves, such as a certain distance or time, or a weight-loss goal.
“We're very excited about this, because it levels the playing field,” Dombrowksi said, adding that other examples of aerobics include back-packing, badminton, cheerleading, yard work and ballroom dancing.
Participants will then be able to earn weekly “wellness-related” prizes, including teeth-whitening and massages.
“It's not about who is the fastest, or who does the most,” Dombrowski said. “It's about participation.”
The online program also has a virtual map, with a route that “tours” New England, so that participants will be able to track progress, but also be able to say they walked “from Yankee Stadium to Fenway Park,” for example. There are also other incentives on the map that pop up when reached, and include web coupons and special offers from sponsors.
A grand prize winner will also be selected at the end of the program, with the likely prize being several gift certificates from local vendors.
Those interested in participating may enter as a team or as an individual, and must register online at www.glastonburychamber.com/events.
