My children, Emily and Jamie Gilchrist, fourth-graders at Nathan Hale Ray Middle School and members of the 4H Club of East Haddam, recently had an amazing pet food and supply drive to benefit the Connecticut Humane Society. They placed two bins at their school, from Feb. 10 to March 15. Incredibly, they collected enough food and supplies to fill the back of our pickup truck! Not only did Nathan Hale-Ray Middle School donate so generously, but they surprisingly collected a cash donation for the animals at the Connecticut Humane Society.

We would like to thank the students, parents, teachers and everyone at Nathan Hale-Ray Middle School who donated for their generosity. The food will go to the Connecticut Humane Pet Food Pantry to help families keep their pets at home. The supplies will help the animals at the Newington and Waterford shelters.

Emily and Jamie happily delivered the food, supplies and cash donation to Connecticut Humane Society in Newington recently. We had the pleasure of meeting Alicea Wright of the Humane Society, and she was thrilled with the success of our drive.

The 4H club of East Haddam truly upholds their pledge:

I pledge my head to clearer thinking,
My heart to greater loyalty,
My hands to larger service and
My health to better living
For my club, my community
My country and my world.
