Police seek information about Windsor crash at Route 305 and I-91 overpass

On Tuesday, March 26, at 10:03 a.m., a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee being operated by Richard Mazzella, age 46, of Clinton, Conn., was traveling northbound in the HOV lane of I-91 approaching exit 37 Rt. 305 in Windsor. The vehicle exited the interstate and continued through the intersection, crossing Route 305 and struck the bridge wall on the north side of Route 305. The vehicle completely penetrated the concrete wall and continued to fall approximately 25 feet to the ground below.
Windsor police officers arriving on scene found the vehicle to be on its roof and on fire. Officers extinguished the fire and emergency crews from Windsor Volunteer Ambulance extricated Mazzella and transported him to Hartford Hospital, where he is in critical condition.
The crash is being investigated by the Windsor Police Department with the assistance of the North Central Municipal Accident Reconstruction Team.
