The Clinton man whose SUV crashed through the Bloomfield Avenue highway barrier in Windsor and plunged off the overpass, falling onto Interstate 91, died on March 27, according to the Windsor Police Department.

Capt. Thomas Lepore said the man, Richard Mazella, 46, was traveling in his 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee in the high occupancy vehicle lane on I-91 north approaching exit 37 around 10 a.m. on March 26.

According to Lepore, Mazella’s SUV exited the highway by way of the high occupancy vehicle lane exit ramp for Bloomfield Avenue and Windsor Center, crossing over the four-lane intersection of Route 305 and plowing through the north side concrete barrier. Lepore said the man had to have been traveling at a high rate of speed to completely penetrate through the concrete wall.

Police, fire and emergency personnel responded to the accident, with the police showing up first to find the vehicle on its roof in the I-91 median and on fire, according to Lepore. The police captain said that eyewitnesses have reported seeing the vehicle on fire as it fell from the overpass to the median.

Police officers doused the blaze with fire extinguishers before emergency crews from Windsor Volunteer Ambulance extracted Mazella from the upturned car, using the Jaws of Life. After Mazella was extracted from the vehicle, he was transported to Hartford Hospital in critical condition before passing away on March 27, Lepore said.

Mazella was the sole occupant of the single-car crash.

Lepore said the accident is currently under investigation by the Windsor Police Department, with help from the North Central Municipal Accident Reconstruction Team.

Police are seeking the help of anyone with information regarding what happened before Mazella’s vehicle left the highway and crashed through the wall. Lepore noted that many witnesses have come forward who witnessed what happened after the vehicle hit the wall and fell to the median, but there have been very few eyewitness reports of the accident on the southern side of the overpass. "The littlest detail could be very helpful," he said.

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Windsor Police Department by calling 860-688-5273.
