State Rep. Melissa Ziobron (R-34) and state Sen. Art Linares (R-33) recently hosted town hall meetings in East Haddam and East Hampton to speak with constituents about issues at the Capitol, listen to their concerns and answer any questions.
Turnout was strong at both events, with nearly 40 residents showing up in East Haddam and close to 60 in East Hampton. Linares and Ziobron gave a quick update on the state’s financial situation and then opened the meetings up for discussion, where topics ranged from pending gun-related legislation to taxes on goods sold at consignment shops. Both legislators stayed behind after the scheduled end time to allow time for people to have their voices heard.
“I really learned at both of the town halls,” Ziobron said. “That’s why we have these; I can’t be an expert in everything and I don’t know how all policies affect all people, so it helps to have input from different sources. My door is always open and I love getting e-mail from constituents so hopefully people continue to reach out to us.”
“The give-and-take at these public meetings lets us hear first-hand about what concerns East Hampton and East Haddam taxpayers the most,” Linares said. “The high attendance at these events shows that people are paying close attention to what is happening in Hartford. We view the taxpayers as our customers, and we will continue to work hard in representing all of you. We will also continue our push to bring fiscal responsibility to Hartford. We look forward to future meetings like these.”
