Local residents have a new option for frozen delights, as Sweet Frog opened on April 13 at 200 Merrow Road in Tolland.

Two Tolland moms – Cheryl Piaseczynski and Valerie Eklund – decided in the summer of 2012 that they wanted to open their own Sweet Frog franchise, after talking with a friend of Eklund’s who owns the shop in Glastonbury.

“The idea of Sweet Frog is really to be part of the community,” said Piaseczynski. “We really want to get involved with all of the different events around town and give back to the community. Our kids have gotten so much, and we just want to give back to schools, sports and the arts. That's the idea for this franchise - not to mention that we really like frozen yogurt.”

Plans include taking part in the Opening Day ceremonies for Tolland Little League and the upcoming opening of Adam's Adventure, as well as reaching out to PTOs and other groups in neighboring towns. The location is also available for fundraising opportunities, in which a designated time frame would be set and Sweet Frog would donate 10 percent of proceeds.

Piaseczynski said that after just a few days, the business seems to be going over well with the local residents.

“It's vacation week, and the kids seem to like it,” she said. “It's a nice, local hang-out place for kids by themselves.”

Guests come in and choose one of three different sized bowls, and then have their choice of 16 flavors of frozen yogurt. Some of the flavors are swapped out from time to time, but the more popular flavors, like chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, are always on tap. Also, there are always non-dairy, gluten-free and peanut-free options available. There are also about 48 dry toppings and about a dozen sauces, including hot fudge and caramel. The customers then bring their self-made treat to the register, where it is weighed and sold by the ounce.
