The golf season got off to a late start for the Suffield High School Wildcats due to poor weather conditions, but the team started the season strong, winning most of its matches. The team is about halfway through the season and expects to qualify for the state tournament this year.
“We are having a good season, everybody is improving. We are hoping to play well and we get better everyday,” said coach Kyle McCullough. “We lost to Avon the other day... by two shots. So that was kind of a good barometer to see what kind of team we are. I think we know we can play with some of the better teams and we just need to put together collectively a good round.”
Avon is one of the top teams in the league, winning nearly all of its matches. Challenges this season will include playing against the top teams - Avon, Ellington and Coventry. McCullough, who has been coaching the team for 15 years, is confident in the team’s ability to challenge the better teams.
Most of the nine players on the team are new, with the exception of a few returning players. Freshman Matt Stafford is among the new golfers and is currently ranked third on the team. The two returning golfers, Connor Beaulieu and Parker Latanzio, both seniors, are the two leading players on the team.
