Last year, the RHAM varsity baseball team finished the regular season with a 20-4 record, and advanced during the post season to the semifinal round of the Class L state tourney. They lost the semifinal game to Fitch, the eventual winner of the championship. The team lost six starters to graduation; returning among the top players are seniors Baylor LaPointe, Travis Salois, Mario Fontanella and Will Dalton.

This year’s team has an 8-6 record heading into the final third of the 2012-13 regular season. “Our pitching staff is the strength of the team,” said head coach Paul Steiner. “We have all-state and all-conference pitcher Baylor LaPointe, and all-conference pitcher Travis Salois." Junior McLane Hill is the third pitcher, “and John Magro and Kyle Czapiga (both seniors) have thrown some important innings,” said Steiner.

Steiner called his team a “hard-working group of players who have shown a lot of pride and really want to do well.” Steiner said the Sachems are “just trying to get better and finish the season strong,” and that at this point in the season the goal is to work “on making the state tourney and going deep into it.”

LaPointe is looking at playing ball for UConn Avery Point in the fall. Salois has secured a scholarship to Brevard College in North Carolina. Fontanella will play ball for Ramapo in New Jersey. Senior Dylan Yaworski is also looking to play ball at the college level, according to Steiner.

Seniors on this year’s RHAM varsity baseball team are: Baylor LaPointe (pitcher, first base); Travis Salois (pitcher, first base); Mario Fontanella (catcher); Dylan Yaworsky (second base); Tom Hunt (third base); Brandon Alexander (third base); Will Dalton (center field); Ian MacGregor (first base); Ben Pitler (left field); John Magro (pitcher, outfield); Kyle Czapiga (pitcher, outfield); and Zac Fritzson (catcher).

The assistant coach is Tim Guernsey.

The Sachems’ last home game of the regular season is on Monday, May 20, against Rocky Hill, beginning at 4:00 p.m.
