Ladies and gentleman, start your… ducks! The East Hartford Rotary Club held its second annual duck race on Sunday, June 2, on the Hockanum River. The race began with a giant payloader dumping the 2,178 little yellow ducks into the water where the East River Drive extension crosses over the Hockanum River. The race was just over a quarter of a mile long.
Raffle tickets were sold for $10 each, with the number on the ticket matching the number of the ticket holder's duck in the race. The winning entry came from Glastonbury. First prize for the race was $5,000, followed by $1,000 for second, $500 for third and $250 each for fourth and fifth places.
The event was more than just a duck race, as it also featured food, drinks and live music. There was also a contest for the best-dressed duck, where corporations could buy a duck and decorate it. 3D Asset Management took top honors this year for best-dressed duck.
Proceeds from the duck race will benefit the Rotary's various charitable activities, including the new bookmobile that the club presented to the town on Wednesday, May 22.
