South Windsor High School Senior Scholarships and Awards Night honors student achievements

Seniors at South Windsor High School and their families and friends escaped the rain and crowded into Maneeley's Banquet Hall on Monday, June 10, for the 2013 South Windsor Senior Awards and Scholarships Night. Thousands of dollars in scholarships were presented, as well as recognitions, awards and honor cords for the upcoming commencement exercises.
The evening began with scholarships presented from outside the school system. Connecticut Secretary of the State Denise Merrill, whose office is tasked with recognizing a student whose “great citizenship skills” make them deserving of the 12th Grade Excellence in Citizenship Scholarship, bestowed the award to Katie Cavanaugh. A $300,000 scholarship to the U.S. Naval Academy Preparatory School was given to Sam O'Dell. Julia Hanchuk, Dan Bettigole and Steven Battaglini received the South Windsor Little League Scholarship, and Jacqueline Kenefick and Alexis Nagle received the South Windsor Girls' Travel Basketball Scholarship. Ben McAndrew received the Four Seasons Painters Scholarship, Faizah Momen and Mojisolah Spencer received the Ian Haber Memorial Scholarship, and Victoria Russo and Colin Gerrity received the J.E. Shapard Memorial Award.
Donna Shea of UConn announced that 12 students received the competitive University of Connecticut Leadership Scholarship: Tom Basile, Katie Cavanaugh, Robert Chambers, Colin Gerrity, Ambica Mehndiratta, Joshua Mun, Neel Nadpara, Ashwin Nagaraj, Robert Tavernier, Rohin Thomas, Victoria Vonkaenel and Gabby Young.
Michael Blezard of the South Windsor Rotary presented scholarships to 10 students: Alexandra Libro, Timothy Savidge, Casey Clark, Kelly Sicord, Joshua Mun, Samantha Blanco, Ambica Mehndiratta, Tara Fornut, and brothers Tai Thai and Phu Thai.
Forty-four South Windsor Dollars for Scholar awards, sponsored by local clubs and organizations ranging from the SWHS Friends of the Performing Arts, Junior Women's Club, the SW Volunteer Fire Department, school PTOs, and local businesses, were presented to multiple students.
Academic and athletic awards were presented to deserving students, and students who had received awards previously during the school year were again recognized.
The Top Ten Students of 2013 were also announced: Tom Basile, Katie Cavanaugh, Daniel Cohen, Colin Gerrity, Hyun Young Kim, Alexa Libro, Emma Richard, Tim Savidge, Kimberly Soong and Elyse Waksman.
The evening concluded with the much-anticipated announcement of the 2013 valedictorian and salutatorian. This year's valedictorian is Katie Cavanaugh, and the salutatorian is Tim Savidge.
