Labor Day weekend in Woodstock means one thing: The Woodstock Fair. For South Stage Family Fun Center Manager Annette Hamilton, it also means sifting through entries in the Fleischmann Yeast Special Baking Contest.
Hamilton has been in charge of the Fleischmann contest for 15 of the 25 years she's worked at the fair. She receives approximately 32 entries each year, and estimates that a third of them are from men.
“The most difficult thing is coming up with the recipe,” she said with a laugh. “We've had some doozies because they are competing for big money here.”
Each year, the contest changes in some respect. This year, entrants can choose to enter the baked bread contest, the baked dessert pizza contest or both. Contestants must use Fleischmann's Yeast in the recipes.
Entries will be judged on flavor (30 percent), bread texture (20 percent), creativity (25 percent), appearance (15 percent) and ease of preparation (10 percent).
Persons 16 and older can submit one entry per category. A recipe specifying ingredients, directions, measurements and pan sizes must be typed on a 8-1/2 by 11-inch sheet of paper. The recipe must be able to be successfully reproduced in Fleischmann's Yeast test kitchens. All recipes entered become the property of ACH Food and may be used for publicity, promotion and advertising.
What's most fun for Hamilton is seeing the different creations entered in the contest. They come in all shapes and sizes, she said. “It's really interesting to see what they come up with," she said. "The year we had sandwiches was great. Men loved to enter this contest and they always come up with something fancy.” She's not sure what to expect with the dessert pizza contest, but she's looking forward to it anyway.
The identities of the three judges will be kept under wraps until the day of the contest on Sunday, Sept. 1. Contestants must pre-register by Aug. 17. For each entry, Fleischmann's will donate $10 to Share Our Strength No Kid Hungry campaign. For more information go to: www.woodstockfair.com.
