Sponsors sought for National Night Out event's porta-potties

Attendees at Rockville's National Night Out celebration on Aug. 6 will have restrooms to use, despite the fact that they were essentially cut from the Vernon town budget.

Vernon Town Councilman Tom DiDio said that the council had, during budget deliberations, zeroed out the town-wide celebration account, which normally funds things like extra police, the moving of the portable show-mobile, and porta-potties at large events such as the Rockille Fest, July in the Sky and Winterfest.

In that account was $500 for portable commode rental at the National Night Out and another $1,500 for the Rockville Fest in September.

With National Night Out approaching, DiDio said he tried to get the council to reinstate the $2,000 for both events. But, he said the Republicans on the council did not approve the item to come to the agenda. “They did not feel it was relevant, for whatever reason,” DiDio said. “Because of that, we are in a dilemma.”

DiDio, who is also part of the Rockville Community Alliance, which co-sponsors the event, said that there is room to get by without the stage, but the portable toilets are a necessity.

The RCA is now appealing to the public for donations to help cover the cost of the porta-potties for the event.

“We need to have facilities, and the town hall is locked up and there are no public facilities in the area,” he said. “In order to afford them, we're asking the public for donations.”

DiDio said businesses and sponsors, including Target stores, have been very generous toward the National Night Out event, and that it usually a successful event, run on a “shoe-string” budget.

DiDio added that Vernon Republican Committee Chair Hal Cummings has since said that the Republicans have pledged to help fund the porta-potties, and the Democratic Committee has done the same.

“We'll put a sponsorship by the potties, identifying who all of the sponsors are,” DiDio said, adding that the idea of a pay-per-use system was quickly eschewed.
