Somers Village Players community theater has formed a new division called Pied Piper Productions, a youth theater venture geared toward a younger audience. On Aug. 9 and 10, Pied Piper Productions will be performing “Seussical the Musical” at Worthington Pond Farms and Gardens, located at 359 Mountain Road in Somers. The musical will be performed in an outdoor, theatre-in-the-round venue.
“Seussical” is based on a book written by Lynn Ahrens and Stephen Flaherty and co-conceived with Eric Idle. It is based on the works of children’s author Dr. Seuss and is designed to entertain the entire family. Some of the characters that are featured are the Cat in the Hat, Horton the Elephant, Gertrude McFuzz, Jojo and the Whos from Whoville.
This production is co-produced by Kathy Welch and Wendy Peterson. Welch was the director, advisor and producer for the Somers High School Drama Club for 20 years and she has been with the SVP for 31 years. Peterson has been a member of SVP for more than 38 years. She has performed and stage managed a great number of their shows.
“We have a great deal of talent here,” said Welch. “There are a lot of children as well as adults that are making this production such a success. Not only do they have wonderful voices, and can dance, but they are very animated.”
“Our choreographer, Kate DaSilva, is the owner and operator or Riley’s Dance Studio in Enfield. Our musical director is George Murphy. He is wonderful. We can’t wait for opening night. The musical will spark many imaginations,” Peterson said. “‘Seussical’ is going to put a smile on everyone’s face. There will be singing, dancing and some dialogue, too. We are all working very hard and I know it will pay off.”
Because the performances will take place outdoors, be sure to check the website (www.somersvillageplayers.org) to see if the production is being moved due to weather conditions.
Performances are Friday, Aug. 9, at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 10, at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Tickets are $12 for general admission and $8 for students and seniors. For more information, call 860-265-3342 or go to www.somersvillageplayers.org.
