The South Windsor Square Dance Club held a “Dog Days of Summer” dance at the Congregational Church in South Glastonbury on Aug. 9, featuring singer and caller Jim Schell.

The club has been in existence for 50 years, according to Dan Zimberlin, the club’s president. “We get together as often as we can. We usually have dances once or twice a week,” said Zimberlin. “We are offering lessons this September at the East Hartford Senior Center. We are always looking for new members to join in on our fun.”

Larry Stone regularly comes from Wethersfield to dance. “It’s a lot of fun. I come as often as I can. It helps keep me active and I get to spend time with some great people,” said Stone. “I have been dancing most of my life.”

Schell has been calling square dances as well as round dances for several years. “I love what I do. It’s a night of great fun and we all really enjoy the dancing and music,” said Schell. Schell comes from Lakeville, Mass., to call the dances. “I live a ways away, but that doesn’t matter. I love this,” he said.

The dancers were in typical square dancing outfits, and the room was filled with folk tradition and smiles. The country music was playing as the club members were twirling. Everyone was following the caller’s instructions effortlessly.

“We have approximately 30 members tonight. This is typical for the summer months. As it gets colder and people are no longer on vacations, the amount of dancers increase,” said Zimberlin. “We will have between 40 and 50 dancers then.”

Bob Houghton and Ernie Dufresne sat down to catch their breath for a moment. “We are just taking a short break. We dance a couple of times a week,” said Houghton.

“I have been dancing since 1969,” Dufresne said, “My wife, Joann, and I have been dancing since 1975. We dance at least a couple of times a week. Next weekend, we are heading up to Andover, New Hampshire, for ‘Camp and Dance.’”

“There will be 40 to 60 of our club members at that event. Our club goes each year. We have a blast,” said Joann Dufresne.
