The Windsor Locks Parks and Recreation Department offered a free introductory Zumba class on Aug. 17 in the gym at the Windsor Locks Town Hall. Instructor Kisha Snell hoped to expose residents to Zumba as a way of exercising while having fun and building friendships within the community.
Many of the guests were Snell’s regulars, but some had not done Zumba before. “I’m here today because Kisha goes to my church and I really like her. I figured it would be a fun thing to do,” said Princess Honaker. “This is the first time for me, but I know I will like it.”
When Snell turned on the music, everyone in the gym started moving. Snell moved quickly and effortlessly. The women watched Snell’s every move. The music was upbeat and fast, and the Zumba enthusiasts seemed to really be enjoying themselves.
Snell’s daughter Kaila was in charge of signing in the participants for the event. “My mom is always doing something at home. She Zumbas to DVDs and is always looking for new things to show to the class. She gives lessons here at the town hall a couple of times a week and she also teaches in West Hartford at J-Zoom on Mondays,” said Kaila. “She has been doing this for at least four years now. She really likes it and loves to interact with the people.”
Alba Osorio is a resident of Windsor Locks. “I come here as often as I can,” she said. “I love working out this way. It is a lot of fun. The music is great and Kisha is great too.” Even though her life is hectic and her schedule doesn’t always permit her to take the classes, Osorio looks at this as a way to unwind and de-stress.
The Parks and Recreation Department’s regular fall Zumba session starts Sept. 10. It will run on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 6:30 p.m. The cost of the session is $56 for one day a week and $100 for twice a week. For more information, call 860-627-1420 or go online to www.windsorlocksct.org.
