Historic Frog Rock is a landmark that has turned into a great place to stop for a pleasant picnic, listening to a band or browsing through antiques. The Frog Rock Rest Stop opened this past Memorial Day weekend, and more than 2,000 people have stopped by since.
“We offer the best in food, plus a peaceful setting for lunch and dinner,” says owner Joe Lernould. The menu includes fried clams (strips or whole belly), clam cakes and homemade chowder, burgers and hot dogs, in addition to a variety of sides, drinks and ice cream.
“We saw the rest area for sale a year ago and pictured it to be a stop for picnics and antiques,” said Lernould. The visitor center is filled with antiques and Lernould believes they offer the best fried clams in the state. In addition to that, Frog Rock Rest Stop is becoming a venue for bands and other events.
The venue also boasts a stage for entertainment, which includes car shows and antique and craft events in addition to a variety of bands that will continue to be offered throughout the season.
Frog Rock, which began in 1918, has a long history of family picnics that have been enjoyed by generations. Two-thirds of the people who stop by have fond memories of times spent there through the years.
The Frog Rock Rest Stop Facebook page includes notes and stories from some of these people as well as a photo album of the work that has been done to bring the rest stop to the way it is today.
The owner invites you to stop by the Frog Rock Rest Stop’s convenient location on Route 44 in Eastford, Conn., try the food, enjoy yourself and make some memories of your own.
