Muriel Miller’s art features landscapes, many rendered in vibrant colors. “They’re done on location,” said Miller, speaking at an opening reception for her new exhibit at Windham’s ArtSpace Gallery on Sept. 6. Miller doesn’t work from photographs. “My paintings are plein air,” she said. “They reflect my emotional and artistic response to a scene. I try to capture my feelings, the light and the colors that I see in that ever-changing moment.”
During the past 18 years, Miller has taught art at Eastern Connecticut State University, Central Connecticut State University and Paier College of Art. Many of her paintings were done while teaching students at study abroad programs in England, Ireland, Wales, Scotland and Australia. Others were done closer to her home town of Hampton.
Some study abroad trips have included her close friend, who is a biology professor. Accompanying students can choose to study the local flora and fauna, to paint, or to do both, she said. Miller relishes the exploration involved in these trips. “I paint off the top of my head,” she explained. “I go out with my backpack until I see something interesting.” Miller welcomes changes in the environment. “I may have two or three [paintings] working at the same time,” she said, adding that the same scene can change dramatically as a result of a rain storm or the movement of the sun. “I like the challenge of trying to work with the weather,” said Miller.
Miller’s ArtSpace exhibit includes 82 different works of art, featuring locales as diverse as Hampton, Conn., Yosemite National Park, Jackson Lake, Wyoming, Elabana Falls, Australia and Marloes Sands, Wales.
ArtSpace Windham is located in the historic American Thread Mill along the Willimantic River. The mill building has been renovated to offer 48 one-, two-, and three-bedroom apartments. On the ground floor of the building is the large, bright and airy gallery space. ArtSpace Windham Gallery is run and supported by volunteers, and hosts revolving exhibits featuring the works of local artists.
