Last year, the Windsor High School girls' swim team left states knowing 13 of its most experienced swimmers would not be returning this season, leaving the remaining members slightly uncertain as to the team's future. As the team members entered the 2013 swim season, they soon realized they would be competing with a smaller number of girls due to the large number of swimmers graduating last June.
Coach Erica said there are approximately nine new freshmen and sophomores who have joined the team. “This year is going to be a rebuilding year,” she said. "We have a great group of girls coming in, but not as much experience as the group who left.”
However, captain Rebecca Nelson said she was “pleasantly surprised” with the skills of her new teammates. Nelson said all the girls appear to have some competitive swimming experience. Nelson will be leading the team this year with fellow seniors Zaria Walker and Kelsey Jepsen.
“I am excited to take on the leadership role and teach my teammates,” said Jepsen. “Before, everyone was older than me, and I was working as an individual swimmer. Now, I feel more like a team swimmer, and I want to get people excited and fired up, ready to go.”
