It was a sunny Sunday afternoon with a little breeze on Sept. 8 – perfect football weather – for the season opener of the East Hampton Youth Football and Cheerleading Association’s Hawks Mighty Might team versus South Windsor at the opponent’s Rye Street field.
The team, which includes 24 players ranging from 6 to 8 years old under the tutelage of head coach Dennis Ireland, walked away with an impressive 19-0 win on its first outing of the season.
The East Hampton Youth Football and Cheerleading Association is a non-profit organization dedicated to the principles of good citizenship, sportsmanship and knowledge in competitive fundamentals of the games of football and cheerleading.
Sporting new, impressive-looking uniforms, the team was supported on Sunday by its well-prepared cheer team. The young ladies shouted encouragement from the sidelines, performed cheers, and at game’s end gave a rousing thank you cheer to the team for a game well-played.
Both the cheerleading squads and, of course, the football teams from East Hampton and South Windsor high-fived their opponents after the game – and an observer couldn’t help but feel that everybody came away from the experience a winner.
The Mighty Mites’ first home game of the season is Sunday, Sept. 15, versus Canton, at 3 p.m. For more information, visit www.ehyouthfootball.org.
