Scarecrows and pumpkins will be taking over the Town Green on Saturday, Oct. 12, at the 24th annual Fall Festival. This year’s Fall Festival will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the green and will feature a variety of crafters, vendors and family activities such as pumpkin decorating and a “Create Your Own Scarecrow” contest.  The event will be moved inside the Community Cultural Center in the event of inclement weather.

The immediate parking spots surrounding the Town Green will be reserved for vendors on the day of the Fall Festival, so those planning to attend will need to find alternative parking.

Logan Gauvin, an intern with the East Hartford Parks and Recreation Department, is coordinating the event and as of press time he said there are about 30 vendors signed up for the event.  “We have a whole variety, between foods and different vendors, which is what I was going for,” said Gauvin, a senior at Southern Connecticut State University.

An example of the types of vendors that will be at the Fall Festival include jewelry and accessories, novelties, crafts, a massage information booth, beauty products, martial arts, caricatures and holiday crafts. There will also be gourmet foods, and Bubba’s is the designated food vendor for the event, having prepared food for the festival in years past. “He’s going to have a whole variety of food like nachos, fried chicken, French fries, hot dogs, burgers and beverages,” said Gauvin.

In addition to the vendors and food, activities and live music and entertainment is also planned. Activities include face-painting, games and prizes, inflatables, pumpkin decorating, a petting zoo, Big Daddy’s racing, Halloween crafts and the scarecrow contest. Unlimited ride bracelets can be purchased for $5 and they allow access to the inflatables, carnival-style games, crafts, Big Daddy racing - which features radio-controlled vehicles - and the petting zoo.

The pumpkin-decorating contest and “Create Your Own Scarecrow” contests are free. People can submit their decorated pumpkin to be considered for various prize categories such as "funniest pumpkin" and "most creative pumpkin."

Hay and stakes will be provided for the scarecrow contest, and festival goers are encouraged to bring their own costumes and decorations with which to create their scarecrow.
