‘So You Think You Can Cook’ heading to the final round soon

Six of the original nine contestants moved on to the second round of “So You Think You Can Cook,” the contest sponsored by Vito’s by the Water owner Rob Malfucci. Moving on to round two were Kerri Jenkins, Kim Coccomo, Brendan McGuff, Anna Ciccone, Randi DeLeo and Robby Betz.

The six contestants were divided into groups of three and began cooking right away on Saturday, Oct. 26. The drama began right away with the reveal of the new mystery ingredients: pork belly, Back East Stout, stale bread and white beans. Chefs were challenged to prepare a meal while constantly watching the clock.

Another twist to the contest is the addition of new judge Cindy Anschutz, who was a contestant in last year’s contest. Anschutz is an author, has a cooking blog and has also appeared on NBC’s “Better Connecticut.”

The contest has been fun for online viewers and voters, but the chefs are the ones who are really getting the most out of it. 
“The experience is fun, exciting and nerve-wracking,” said Jenkins. “The nerve-wracking part is the anticipation for the ingredients, but the fun part is once you start cooking. It’s a rush!”

Coccomo agrees. “It is always exciting to hear the ingredients and try to put something together in a short time,” she said. “I think I’m addicted to it – I compare it to the rush of gambling.”

At the end of round two, the drama continued as McGuff was disqualified for not showing up and Jenkins will be disqualified for a sanitary mistake which was made during her meal preparation. That leaves only four contestants who will be in the running to make it to round three, the grand finale.

Round three will be held on Nov. 23 at Vito’s by the Park in Hartford, with the final two contestants battling it out for the top prize. The event will feature a beer-tasting from Back East Brewery.
