The Hebron tree-lighting ceremony on Dec. 1 next to the town hall kicked off a week-long series of visits by Santa Claus. The year 2013 marks the second annual tree-lighting sponsored by the Hebron Volunteer Fire Department, according to organizers Matthew Troy and Steve Ladd.

“Last year we kind of claimed this as the official town tree,” said Troy, with a gesture toward a large evergreen lit alongside the town hall parking lot. The fire department is responsible for the hanging of all of the Christmas lights in town, and this year’s lighting of the town hall grounds included the tree, the gazebo and several nearby trees.

This year’s tree-lighting featured Santa riding in on a light-festooned fire truck. Hot beverages and cookies were provided by the fire department auxiliary. “And every night this week, Santa will be riding this truck around town,” said Troy. “It’s a fun way to bring Santa to the community.”

Santa’s tour was scheduled to bring him to Amston Lake on Tuesday, Dec. 3, to Amston on Wednesday, Dec. 4, to Hebron Center on Thursday, Dec. 5, to South Gilead on Friday, Dec. 6, and to North Gilead on Saturday, Dec. 7. All tours begin at 6 p.m. For updates, "like" the fire department on Facebook at, or follow Santa’s tour on Twitter at
