According to Coventry Town Council Chair Jeff Shorts, this will be the last year that the town tree-lighting ceremony will be held underneath the massive evergreen in front of the Coventry Town Hall. “The tree is sick,” said Shorts. For safety reasons, the tree will be cut down sometime during the next year, and a new tree will be planted somewhere on the town complex grounds.

But for one last year, old traditions held and the large tree sheltered the holiday proceedings. The event included performances by the Coventry High School band and chorus. Parks and Recreation and Public Works both helped out with the proceedings, and the Coventry Volunteer Fire Department delivered Santa on a fire truck. After the lighting, there was a reception inside, with Santa holding court, refreshments and crafts.
