Public forum set for Wednesday, Dec. 18 at Waddell to comment on SMARTR committee’s recommended school improvement plan

The first of three scheduled public forums to address the SMARTR committee’s recommendations for improving schools will be held at 7 p.m., on Wednesday, Dec. 18, at Waddell Elementary School on Broad Street. The other two public forums are slated for January and February. An exact date and location for these forums has yet to be announced.
Waddell is on the list of possible schools to close. The SMARTR committee recommends closing up to two elementary schools as part of their overall plan. The other schools to be considered for closing are Verplank and Washington.

The SMARTER committee’s recommendations include:·
Renovate Cheney building at the Bennet Complex for 5/6 Academy. Fifth grade classrooms in the Cheney building. Share cafeteria, gym, art space, music, etc.
Ensure Highland Park is fully occupied after 5th grade moves.
Rebuild like new and expand Robertson.
Rebuild like new and expand either Washington or Verplank.
Close up to two surplus elementary schools and avoid capital investment
Invest in upgrading at balance of elementary schools.
Accomplish all by 2020.
