Last year’s Rockville/Bolton/Coventry/Lyman Memorial hockey team ended the season with a 17-1 record, losing the Division III state finals to Newington/Berlin/Manchester to take the runner-up position for the season. This year’s team had a 3-0 record as of Jan. 6.
The team is heavy with seniors for 2013-14. “We’ve got a lot of experience this year,” said assistant coach James Motyka. “They know what we’re looking for. They know the systems we want to play.”
Motyka said that all of the upperclassmen are contributing. “There’s nobody that stands out above the rest,” he said. The team posted six goals during the first game of the season, against Farmington/Avon/Windsor. “Six different people scored them,” said Motyka. “You always like to see that.”
Heading into a Jan. 4 game against last year’s champions, Newington/Berlin/Manchester, “This will be a good test for us,” said Motyka. Despite an early goal by NBM, RBCL managed to take the game in overtime, with a 2-1 final score.
Christian Stevenson is the head coach for the Rockville/Bolton/Coventry/Lyman Memorial hockey team. Stevenson took over as head coach after Rockville joined the collaborative last year. Motyka is an assistant coach, along with Gabe Kendall (from Coventry) and Bill Kerr. The captains for this year’s team are Liam McGrath and Hunter Byram. The assistant captains are Kevin Morton and Seth Alexander.
RBCL takes on Newington/Berlin/Manchester again on Friday, Jan. 10, at their home rink, the Bolton Ice Palace. The game begins at 8:20 p.m. Check out the team’s full season schedule at www.casciac.org.
