Nothing But Nets continues toward the goal of raising 1,000 mosquito nets to be sent to Africa. This initiative is partnered with the United Nations that assures $10 will take a net from the factory to the village in Africa.
It is the female nocturnal mosquito that carries this devastating disease, so sleeping under these nets impregnated with insecticide is a simple preventative measure. Since 2007, these nets have been sent to the neediest villages, where they have seen a 90-percent reduction in deaths due the effects of malaria. The goal is to cover the continent by 2015. We are pleased to announce that the town of Colchester has currently raised 710 nets and is well on the way to the goal of 1,000 nets. Your help is needed for the final push toward that goal.
Cragin Library continues the can and bottle drive, and a collection container remains at Noel’s Supermarket. Town businesses have been very generous in their donation of gift cards that were raffled off at various holiday fairs in town, and the senoir center had a successful 50/50 raffle for the cause.
If your business or town organization has any fundraising ideas or would like to help spread the word, please call 860-537-5185. Let’s fill in that mosquito on the Town Green and help prevent the loss of life on the continent of Africa, where a child dies every 60 seconds due to this preventable disease.
