Posted on Jan. 05, 2014COYOTES: One word answer for dealing with coyotes: Fencing. A good perimeter fence backed up with high-tensile electric is probably best. My own chickens are in a little Fort Knox. With research, you can actually find guard dogs for poultry protection. New Zealand is using Maremmas to protect their endangered penguins from foxes. Of course, there is the rancher answer of “shootin ‘em.” If you don’t hunt, you can network easily enough to find someone who will help. You can try motion flood lights or the motion water sprayers. And then there’s the natural answer of urine marking the territory. Finally, to report coyote problems and for control information, call the CT DEEP Wildlife Division at 860-424-3021.
