When Acting Principal Robert Sartoris reflects on the Howell Cheney Technical High School class of 2010, many unique individuals, each with different accomplishments, stand out.
There is salutatorian Kendall Segar, who is also the female athlete of the year, and valedictorian Rodney Sutherland, who is going to UConn on scholarship.
There is Blaise Sharkey, who celebrated four years perfect attendance, and Dan Wilson, who received his Eagle Scout award.
There is male athlete of the year Johadd Easterling, who was named MVP for his performance as a quarterback on the football team, and is the captain and a point guard for the basketball team.
There are two students who placed first in CT SkillsUSA competitions, Randy Levitt in the diesel category and Daniel Pelletier in the welding category.
There is the graduating class girls basketball team, who reached State Tournament. They are the first girls basketball team from Cheney Tech to do so.
They were the first class to hold a graduation at Cheney Tech’s new outdoor athletic center. At the June 15 graduation, Sartoris congratulated his class.
“You leave here tonight carrying with you something only your fellow graduates in the technical high school system can claim: skills in your trade area that will open doors to employability and career advancement, and an academic diploma that will open doors to higher education.” He reminded them of the value of dedication and hard work. With these skills, he said, “you can – and will – reach your loftiest dreams.”
“When you walk away from this school one last time, don’t forget your dreams,” said salutatorian Kendall Segar, giving her class some words of encouragement and advice.
Valedictorian Rodney Sutherland saluted his classmates one last time before they received their diplomas. “In the immortal words of ‘AC/DC’s’ singer Brian Johnson, ‘For those about to rock, we salute you!’” said Sutherland.
