NORWICH - A nurse at The William W. Backus Hospital will receive a Healthcare Hero Award at the Connecticut Hospital Association Annual Meeting June 23.
Alice Facente, a registered nurse in the Backus Education Department, is receiving the award, given to 10 healthcare workers statewide each year, for her efforts in educating staff and the public on how to provide culturally sensitive healthcare to an increasingly diverse patient population.
She led the formation of a Cultural Diversity Council the hospital, with staff members representing many of the nationalities in eastern Connecticut. The council became a forum through which to explore cultural issues affecting patients, and propose and implement solutions that were both sensitive and practical.
The council also focused on teaching staff how to care for patients from different cultures, translation of important healthcare documents, identified interpretation resources on staff and developed measures to ensure compliance with the National Standards on Culturally and Linguistically Appropriate Services.
One of its most visible accomplishments was the creation of an annual multicultural health fair. Led by Facente, the fair attracts hundreds of attendees from the community and the hospital.
