VFW Post 7659 and its Women’s Auxiliary are sponsoring two packing events this summer to collect and ship items to overseas troops. On July 15, items will include summer necessities with a special emphasis on sending packages to our female soldiers. A joint venture with the Hartford Elks Club, the event will be held July 15 from noon to 3 p.m., at South Congregational Church, 1301 Forbes St., East Hartford. The Girl Scouts have also donated cookies to send. Volunteers are needed for packing and other shipping duties. Donations of summer items are welcome on that day or by special arrangement. On Aug. 12, the VFW is teaming up with the Glastonbury Elks Club, to collect and pack towels, socks and pillowcases, from noon to 6 p.m., at the Elks Club, 98 Woodland St., Glastonbury. Volunteers for the day and donations are needed. The VFW will also hold its summer picnic that day. Hot dogs and hamburgers will be provided; attendees are asked to bring a side dish or beverage. For those who cannot stop by the events, the VFW is also in need for monetary donations to defray mailing costs. Checks should be sent to: VFW Post 7659, c/o Frank Forrest, 165 Maple St., East Hartford, CT 06118. For more information, to donate merchandise or to volunteer, call Frank Forrest at 860-690-2845, or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
