Vintage baseball rescheduled
Stafford - posted Jun, 29 2012
The Vintage Base Ball Doubleheader, co-sponsored by The Stafford Historical Society and The Friends of Vintage Base Ball, Inc., which was cancelled due to rain earlier this month, has been rescheduled for June 30. The games will take place at Hyde Park and will feature the Alert Fire Hose Company and Billy Barnie’s Blue Boys, both members of the Coltsville Vintage Base Ball League. Both games will be played using the rules, uniforms, equipment and customs of the 19th century. The first game, which begins at 11 a.m., will be played by the rules which were in effect in 1865. The second game, will begin approximately 20 minutes after the conclusion of game one, and will be played by the rules of 1861. In between games, kids will be invited to swing a wood bat at a lemon-peel ball, interact with the players and run the bases. Free hand-outs will be given to all kids. The Friends of Vintage Base Ball will be on hand to answer questions about the rules of the early game and to sell their vintage sarsaparilla, birch beer and red creme soda pop. If you’re a baseball fan and/or a history buff, you won't want to miss this event, showcasing base ball as it was played in the 1800s. The public is invited and there is no admission charge. Just bring a lawn chair or a blanket. Free parking is available in the public parking lot adjacent to the Eagle Mart convenience store located between Spring Street and River Road.
