A burnable item may be dropped off at the transfer station free of charge on Oct. 17, 20 and 21. Mattresses and boxsprings are not permitted. A permit and punchcard are not required, however, proof of Vernon residency must be shown. Other items that may regularly be dropped off at the transfer station free of charge are waste motor oil and antifreeze, electronics (including televisions), lead acid batteries, and any item that is at least 75 percent metal. Disposal of freon units would require a permit and punchcard. In addition, excess refuse and recycling may be dropped off free of charge year-round. Normal hours for the transfer station located on Hockanum Boulevard are Wednesdays and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from noon to 4 p.m.
