Leaf collection
Vernon - posted Oct, 05 2012
Leaf collection will begin on Nov. 5. All leaves should be raked to the curb by this date to ensure collection. DPW crews will be out the week before this date to test the vacuum equipment and training temporary leaf laborers. Do not rake leaves into the street or onto the sidewalk. This is a safety and flooding hazard as well as a violation of Ordinance No. 235, Sec. 7-20 and is punishable by a fine of $100. Leaf bins will be open by Oct. 12 and are located at the Nye Street Firehouse (off West Street); the Church Street parking lot; and at Legion Field (off Regan Road at rear of parking lot). Deposit leaves in the areas provided. Bins are for leaves only - no grass clippings or brush. Contamination caused by disposal of any other type of yard waste will result in leaf bin being shut down. Remove the container used to transport leaves. Plastic bags can be left in the trash barrel. Lawn-sized paper bags are recyclable and do not need to be emptied. Bagged leaves cannot be put out for collection with regular trash. A pickup for bagged leaves may be scheduled for the first two Fridays in December, call 860-870-3500 to schedule. Both biodegradable paper bags and plastic lawn and leaf bags will be collected.
