National recognition

NORWICH- The William W. Backus Hospital continues to be recognized nationally for adoption of information technology, with the latest milestone being among the best for implementing an electronic medical record (EMR). Backus is one of only 6.7% of the more than 5,300 hospitals nationwide being tracked to reach Stage 6 of the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Analytics EMR adoption model. There are only seven stages, which means the Backus Management Information System (MIS) Department is only one stage away from being deemed an “advanced electronic patient record environment.” This milestone comes after Backus was named a “Most Wired” hospital two years in a row. In addition, Stage 6 hospitals must have IT capabilities that position them to successfully address many of the current industry transformations, including meaningful use criteria, HIPAA and other government quality reporting programs.
