American Red Cross seeking blood donors
REGION - posted Nov, 16 2012
The American Red Cross is encouraging eligible donors to give blood in celebration of Thanksgiving. Blood is an essential component for patient care in area hospitals, and the only source of blood is a healthy, volunteer blood donor. Blood is needed throughout the holiday season and during the cold winter months. Due to hectic holiday schedules, busy travel plans and inclement weather, blood donations typically drop during the winter months. Blood must be available for those who need it, whenever they need it. Nationwide around 44,000 blood donations are needed each and every day to meet the needs of accident victims, cancer patients, and children with blood disorders, these patients rely on blood products during their treatment. Call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) or visit www.redcrossblood.org to make an appointment or for more information. A blood donor card or driver’s license, or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17 years of age, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also have to meet certain height and weight requirements. In November, the Red Cross and Suburban Propane launch the “Warm Your Heart, Warm Your Home” campaign. All presenting donors at Connecticut American Red Cross blood drives during the month of November will be eligible to win a $200 gift card.
