Support soldiers

The holidays are coming and VFW Post 7659 and Post 7659 Ladies Auxiliary are seeking help from the community to "Support Our Soldiers." Candy and cookies (homemade, commercial and bakery cookies) will be collected, packed and sent to soldiers in Afghanistan and other far away corners of the world. The next cookie collection is Dec. 2 beginning at noon at South Congregational Church, 1301 Forbes St., East Hartford. Drop off all donations before 2 p.m. for sorting. Volunteers are needed to help sort, organize and pack cookies and to make letters of support, cards and drawings for the holidays. In addition to cookies and candy donations are needed of art supplies for card making and light refreshments for workers. The next collection will be Valentine candy and cards on Jan. 20, same place and time. Those who cannot attend a packing event can help with a donation. It costs approximately $15 to ship one 25 pound box. A total shipping bill of at least $1,000 is anticipated.
