Safe Net Ministries

Stafford/Union - posted Dec, 14 2012

Since its founding in 2004, Safe Net Ministries has helped soften the landing for hundreds of Stafford and Union families who “fall through the cracks” while struggling to cope with difficult times. This non-profit corporation, a collaborative effort between seven local churches and Flo’s Friendship Kitchen, operates both a food cupboard and transitional housing program. Additional support is provided on an as-needed basis. Safe Net’s Food Cupboard, located on Main Street in Stafford, distributes food on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. In 2011, the food cupboard distributed the equivalent of 75,160 meals to 283 families (767 people). These numbers have continued to grow in 2012. Flo’s Friendship Kitchen, one of the original incorporators of Safe Net Ministries, provides hot, nutritious meals in the Fellowship Hall of First United Methodist Church. Meals are served on Wednesdays at 11:30 a.m. and Fridays at 5 p.m. In 2011, Flo’s provided nearly 5,500 meals. Elsie’s House, Safe Net Ministries' short-term transitional program, provides working families with a place to stay following an unexpected event such as a fire, landlord foreclosure or property condemnation. In addition to the above services, Safe Net’s General Assistance Fund is available to help people with sudden urgent needs that cannot be met by Stafford Social Services. Assistance may be provided in the form of emergency oil deliveries, utilities, prescriptions, gas cards or rental assistance. Safe Net Ministries’ services are available to residents of Stafford and Union, as well as to members of the churches in these communities. Residents must be referred by Stafford Social Services, which can be reached at 860-684-4239, or on an emergency basis, by a member of the Stafford or Union clergy. Volunteers and donors are needed to help ensure that Safe Net can meet the needs of the community. To learn more, visit or call Keith Marin at 860-916-4445.
