Essay conest winners

PLAINFIELD- William L. Mercier VFW Post 5446 are pleased to announce this year's winners of the Voice of Democracy and Patriot's Pen Essay contests. Voice of Democracy essay contest was held at Plainfield High School with 265 students participating under the direction of John Schiffner. This year's theme was, "Is the Constitution Still Relevant?". First -place winner of $100 is Senior Matthew Liebel; Second place winner of $50 is Senior Derek Meier, and third place winner of $25 is Junior Christopher Sebastian. Teachers participating were Lisa Bastien, Russell Hart, Kevin Mariano, John Schiffner, Patrick Smith, David Wilcox and Jon Zielinski. The Patriot's Pen Essay contest was held at Plainfield Central School with 245 students participating in grades 6, 7 and 8, under the direction of Judy Gilkenson. This year's theme was, "What I Would Tell America's Founding Fathers." First place winner of $40 is James Robert; Second place winner is Wayne Carpenter; Third place winner of $15 is Blake Savelle. Teachers participating were Jane Arruda, Lucy Ashmore, Christine Bourque, Christine Brooks, Kathy Farland, Judy Gilkenson and Cindy Huhtanen. The awards will be presented on Thursday, Jan. 31 at the Post Home on Winsor Avenue at 7 p.m. Snow date of Feb. 7. Invited guests include State VFW Commander John Hollis, State VFW Aux. President Virginia Livernoche, 4th District Commander David Greene, 4th Dist. President Margaret Brown, Superintendent of Schools Kenneth Dipietro, Plainfield High School Principal James Worth, Plainfield Central Principal Scott Gagnon and 1st Selectman Paul Sweet.
