REGION- As requests for energy assistance continue to come in from struggling families this winter, Operation Fuel is seeking individual donations to help meet the need. Operation Fuel is the only statewide emergency energy assistance program in Connecticut; assistance is provided through its statewide network of over 100 fuel banks. Most recipients are either elderly or working families with children. Operation Fuel has received the highest rating possible from Charity Navigator, which is one of the nation’s leading charity evaluators. Through mid-February of this year, Operation Fuel already had committed to give out more than $2 million in energy assistance to Connecticut households. Most of this money has come from corporate and state grants with private donations accounting for a small percent of the grant money distributed to date. The maximum annual grant is $500 per household. Operation Fuel’s goal is to raise at least $1 million from individual donors this winter, but so far has raised only $250,000. The majority of energy assistance requests this winter are from working families who are in financial crisis and need help paying their oil bill. In addition, Operation Fuel expects to receive a significant number of requests for energy assistance when the state utilities’ Winter Protection program ends on May 1. Donations for Operation Fuel can be sent to Operation Fuel, One Regency Drive, Suite 200, Bloomfield, CT 06002 or made online at www.operationfuel.org. Individuals who need emergency energy assistance should call 211.
