DANIELSON- Quinebaug Valley Community College was awarded a $154,211 grant from the Connecticut College Access and Success Program (ConnCAS) through the Connecticut Office of Higher Education. ConnCAS is designed to strengthen minority retention and graduation at Connecticut’s colleges and universities. Since its creation in state statute in 1983, ConnCAS has significantly helped Connecticut colleges and universities recruit and enroll more minority students. The grant award period is four years running July 1, 2013 – August 31, 2017. Yearly renewal amounts will be subject the availability and level of appropriations to fund ConnCAS programs. The QVCC Willimantic Center will administer the grant and their proposal titled “The Learners, Leaders, Partners program (LLP)” targets Windham County students entering college for the first time. Key elements of the program include mentoring and advising, enriched academic support, financial support and counseling, job development and career exploration and a variety of enrichment activities. The overarching goal of retention and graduation is coupled with the desire to foster well-rounded individuals ready to continue their education or enter the workforce. Students must be first time college students enrolling for the fall 2013 semester and depending on their basic skills assessment, a summer math boot camp may be required. A multi-day orientation program will take place in August. For additional information about “The Learners, Leaders, Partners Program (LLP)”, contact Jose Aponte, 860-423-1824 or email@example.com.
