Flag Day ceremony

PUTNAM- At 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 9, at Rotary Park in Putnam, officers and members of Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Putnam Lodge #574 will conduct their annual Flag Day ceremony. The Putnam Elks will be joined at Rotary Park by members of the Putnam Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1523, The American Legion Mayotte-Viens Post 13, the Quinebaug Valley Young Marines and the Putnam High School Band. The National Anthem will be sung by local veteran Sarah L. Hamby, a member of the American Legion and the Elks Lodge. As part of the Flag Retirement Ceremony, several flags will be appropriately retired at Rotary Park. Additional flags will be retired at the Elks Lodge, located at 64 Edmond Street. If you have a United States flag that is worn or damaged, feel free to bring it to the Putnam Elks, WINY Radio or to your local VFW prior to June 9. American Flags should not be buried or thrown away but can be burned during an appropriate Flag Day ceremony. The week of June 14 is designated as "National Flag Week." Flag Day is officially June 14.
