Summer concert series

EAST HADDAM- The Music at the Meeting House Summer Concert Series for 2013 hosted by the First Church of Christ, Congregational in East Haddam, begins on Saturday, July 20, at 7:30 p.m. with a stellar performance by the Thimble Island Sax Quartet. They perform a variety of pieces from classical to jazz, big band sound, popular music, and baroque to contemporary. Tickets are $15. at the door, or $12. in advance by calling 860-537-2052. A reception will follow. The second in the series will be performed by Grayson Hugh on Saturday, Aug. 3, at 7:30 p.m., when he returns for a second time to do a Midsummer's Eve Concert. Joined by Polly Messer, Grayson plays the piano and sings with huge spirit and energy, and this year will debut new compositions he created on a recent writing retreat on Block Island. Tickets are $15, $12 in advance by calling 860-537-2052 before the day of the performance. The third in our Summer Concert Series will be performed on Sunday, Aug. 18, at 3 p.m. when the Home Grown String Band, a family of artists from Long Island, arrive to showcase American Roots folk music played on authentic instruments from colonial days. This event will also include a trunk show of beautifully knit pieces made from wool spun and died by one of the daughters, as well as wood carvings and replicas of buttons of pewter and enamel. Knitters are invited to come in groups, and work during the show! The First Church Knitting Group will be in attendance, as will friends and customers of local yarn shops. The reception will allow ample time to view the show and meet the artists. Tickets are $15, $12 in advance. A special offer this season is the purchase of tickets to all three concerts for $30, but reservations must be made in advance of the first concert (July 20) by calling 860-537-2052.
